What is Swedish Massage?

It is said that Swedish Massage, also called “Classic Massage” is the most popular type of treatment. Swedish Massage is known for “soft, long kneading strokes as well as light, rhythmic, tapping strokes on the topmost layers of muscle. This is also combined with movement of the joints.”[1]

There are four main types of strokes for this modality including effleurage, petrissage, friction and tapotement. Effleurage is a gliding or sliding movement.  Petrissage is the motions of squeezing, rolling and kneading. Tapotement is defined as rhythmic tapping that can be done with different parts of the hand. Friction is deep, circular strokes that make the layers of tissue rub against each other. Swedish Massage is best for relaxation and to promote energy. [2] It can be found in almost any type of massage therapy environment.

Massage therapy can have several benefits from stress relief and relaxation, to the treatment of chronic problems and pain management.  Find the techniques or modality best suited for your needs and start realizing the benefits of massage therapy first hand.
