If your gifts to others become your legacy, what gift would you want to give the world?
This coming year, 400 senior citizens in rural Ohio and Indiana will receive massage who wouldn’t normally have had the chance. 150 people whose lives were impacted by severe flooding in the northeastern US will get the chance to relax while being treated by a competent and caring massage therapist. 38 individuals who’ve lost a loved one will experience bodywork to help them manage the physical dimensions of their grief. 24 former prisoners will learn to manage their stress as they re-enter society with a combination of massage and counseling. And more soldiers returning home with injuries will be able to get a massage free of charge.
It’s not world peace, but it’s a start. And it’s all thanks to the work of the Massage Therapy Foundation.
The Massage Therapy Foundation was started in 1990, and its mission is promoting the knowledge and the practice of massage. They sponsor research, foster community service, offer continuing education courses, and generally make it their business to make the world of massage therapy a better place to be.
So how can you get involved with the Massage Therapy Foundation? Visit their site at www.massagetherapyfoundation.org
If you’re getting great results helping people with different medical conditions, you can enter the case report contest.
If you want to learn more about how to tell massage fact from fiction, sign up for the Basics of Research Literacy online course.
If you’ve got an idea for changing the world through therapeutic touch, see if a Community Service Grant might help you make that dream a reality.
If you want to support the people who are doing all of the above, make a donation.
Of course, if you believe in the work of the Massage Therapy Foundation and want others to know about it too, the quickest action you can take is to spread the word. Share this article. Link to the IJTMB when people have questions about research. Talk up the Foundation wherever you are, whether it’s in your office or on Twitter.
World peace? We’re getting there. But for sharing the gift of massage with the world in the meantime, at least we have the MTF.
