West Virginia Massage Therapist Licensing and Certification Requirements

If you've graduated from a massage school in West Virginia and are interested in practicing massage therapy as your career, it is important to stay up to date on the rules and regulations that apply to massage therapists in West Virginia to verify what the requirements are. Massage therapists in the State of West Virginia are required to obtain and maintain a state license.

West Virginia Massage Therapy Board - New License Requirements The Massage Therapy Board is responsible for issuing licenses to qualified professionals within the state of West Virginia. In order to practice within the state, you must successfully attain and maintain licensure with the Board. The West Virginia Massage Therapy Licensure Board follows the same guidelines as the NCBTMB except as a 2 year license instead of the national 4 year term.

If you are not currently licensed to operate in the state of West Virginia, you must apply for the Two Year License. Licenses can be issued at any time, and expire two years after issuance.

Code of Ethics

All licensed therapists are required to post the complete code of ethics at their place of business. This code is included in the license application packet or can be downloaded directly from here.

West Virginia regulations specify that all Licensed Massage Therapists must keep their education current by completing a series a Continuing Education courses each year in order to continue their licensure. Every therapist must complete a minimum of 24 hours of Continuing Education courses during each licensure period (2 years). Of this 24 hours, at least 3 hour must be in professional ethics.

Six (6) CEU's can be carried over from the previous licensing period. Continuing education units "carried over" are the units that you had earned from the last period totaling over twenty-four (24).

To remain a Massage Therapist in the state of West Virginia, you need to apply for a renewal in order to keep your license current. All licenses expire two years after issuance, so you will need to apply for a renewal before before you current license expires. Your renewal will then be valid for two years after it is issued and expires at the end of the month.
