Becoming a Massage Therapist in Iowa

Because of state regulations, to become a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) one must have earned at least 600 educational hours in the appropriate field. It is also required that one has 24 continued hours every 2 years when wanting to renew their license or certificate in massage therapy. In order to confirm your license the MBLEx or NCBTMB exam must be taken (both offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards) and one must be trained in CPR. One major school in Iowa that offers a massage therapy program is called Carlson College of Massage Therapy, located right in Anamosa, Iowa. Carlson's program is 6 months (Full Time-775 hours) and 11.5 months (Evening/Some Saturdays-NOW 700 hours) in length! At Carlson College you will receive an education that begins with a great Swedish massage foundation. Upon successful completion of this coursework, students then move into the neuromuscular based work that we call "Specifics". This work is rehabilitative based and educates the students on how to effectively treat chronic or acute muscular dysfunction. Combining these two modalities is what makes our graduates highly marketable in the healthcare community! All of Carlson's instructors are licensed massage therapists and have extensive, "real life" experience developing and maintaining private practices. Federal Financial Aid is available to those who qualify. Carlson is the only school in Iowa accredited by COMTA (Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation). COMTA is the only accreditation agency that is specific to the profession of massage therapy.
